EU launches the Digital Plastic Passport to boost recycling traceability
2025.10.04 - 17:50
The European Commission has officially launched the Digital Plastic Passport, a system designed to track and verify the origin, composition, and destination of recycled plastics across the EU. The new digital tool will become mandatory by 2027 for all recyclers and converters operating within the Union.
The European Union has taken a major step toward full traceability of recycled materials by introducing the EU Digital Plastic Passport. The system will digitally record each step of the plastic lifecycle — from collection, sorting, and recycling, to reintroduction into production chains. Its main objective is to improve transparency, ensure compliance with End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria, and prevent illegal trade in plastic waste. The platform will be mandatory for all recycling and processing companies by 2027 and will integrate national reporting systems into a unified EU database. A pilot program involving 12 EU Member States — including Germany, France, and Romania — has already started, with financial support from the Horizon Europe and LIFE programs. This initiative is expected to become the backbone of the EU’s circular economy framework, ensuring traceability, accountability, and sustainability across the plastics value chain.
