Romania under EU infringement procedure for incomplete transposition of the SUP Directive
2025.09.22 - 08:48
The European Commission has formally notified Romania for failing to correctly implement the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive.
The European Commission has initiated an infringement procedure against Romania, citing non-compliance in the transposition of the SUP Directive (EU 2019/904). The main issues identified include: Excessive derogations granted to certain products. Producers not fully covering the costs of waste collection and management. Lack of incentives for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. This situation exposes Romania to possible sanctions and increases pressure on both legislators and the packaging industry to adjust quickly.
